I am learning to fly!

Roll up, roll up! The circus is in town!

I am aching. But what a class! The trapeze lessons were a lot harder than I thought. But I did it! I loved it too but I was in for quite a shock. I arrived at the amazing building and sat waiting in anticipation for the class to begin. A trickle of girls walked in all nervous hellos and giggling smiles, not knowing what we had let ourselves in for. We met our instructors and we went up the stairs to the studio. In a large space hung by the ceiling was two trapeze bars and a set of silk ropes.

We started with introductions and warm up which included a game of chase which made us all giggly Benny Hill style scuttling around the room. Then the instructor gave us a demo of what he was going to teach us on the trapeze bar. Every one gasped in awe and wonder as he twirled and somersaulted around the bar upside down with the greatest of ease. I cried out " Oh my God, I thought we were just going to sit on it and swing!!"

Reality bites. It bit even harder when it was my turn. You can't get on the trapeze bar like a horse like I thought, Oh no, you have to hang from your arms and get your feet on the bar that way. Yeah, just think about that for a minute. Trust me I was at that stage a lot longer. At least we were all in the same boat. Exclamations of "Oh, this is hard!" were heard from all of us at one point. We all got on really well and I am looking forward to doing the class with them next week.

But we soon all got into the "Swing" of things (I am sorry I couldn't help it) and we were all hanging perilously by my legs in the "candle pose" at one point. We all made a mental note that if you are upside down, our top follows suit so tucking them into our bottoms was the best option. We were taught all kinds of techniques and poses with beautiful names such as the angel, birds nest, mermaid, star and stag. So much in two hours and my hand hurt with gripping so tight.

My body is paying today and I can barely type! It was scary trying not to fall off, but really cool and I will have to work hard with this one. But then again, there is no harm in that is there? It is hard work and the blisters on the palms of my hands will prove that. But I want to do this, shake things up a bit and fly through the air every Monday evening for the next few weeks!
So with the sun setting with watchful eyes a wee bit later these days, I want time to stand still to go on new adventures in life and learn more skills.

let me look into the future..................
Wait, can you feel dancing in the air

and hear the distance beat of a drum?

Yep, filling up my Tuesdays nights are African drumming lessons which begin next week! I am taking my wee sister with me as she is really good at drumming, has done festivals and street carnivals for years already! So we will be going to the classes very week and getting together for a giggle and catch up.

I am going to take pictures of the trapeze lessons next week, and show you the beautiful building as well!

So my diary is filling up and I am getting out there! " 2010 is the year of fun! Hope all is well in your world!

Oh my word Claire! Hanging from a trapeze? I can only imagine how your body feels. The bright side is your body will feel better before your next class. The drums sounds like fun. We have a drum circle a couple of times a month and nothing but fun. You and your sister will have a blast. I hope that 2010 is all the fun that you have ever imagined!

Crikey you put me to shame with the amount of energy you have and the things you do! But yeah fun, get as much in as you can, it makes life worth living. Overdose on the stuff because you never know what life will throw at you and you need the good memories to haul you through the bad times. You go girl!

Oh my goodness - I am SO excited for you!

You are a brave girl for dangling from a trapeze! Good for you for doing something that you've always wanted to try!

Enjoy your drumming too. I took a quickie lesson once and loved it!

This is truly incredible. There is no way you could be making this trapeze stuff up...so I am in awe. What a wonderful challenge! I can't wait to read more. When do you join the circus and come to Charleston? And how did you come up with the idea that you wanted to do it?

What an awesome experience! Thanks for sharing it. I don't have a Trapeze class in my state but I'll travel soon.
